Planning a trip to Sri Lanka? Discover the best time to visit for beaches, mountains, temples and safaris.
Sri Lanka is an amazing destination that really does have a bit of everything. There are golden beaches lined with palm trees, lush tea plantations stretching across misty hills, epic train journeys through the varied landscapes, ancient temples, delicious food and unforgettable wildlife encounters. It may look like a small island, but it’s somewhere you can pack in a lot of experiences.
We visited Sri Lanka on our honeymoon, and it quickly became one of those trips that reminds you just how much a destination can offer. One day, you can be climbing huge rock formations like Sigiriya, the next, you’re zooming through the hill country on one of the most scenic train journeys you’ll go on, or spotting elephants on safari. We even took a hot-air balloon flight, which gave us a completely different perspective on the landscapes.

Plus there’s the coastline. After all those adventures, we absolutely loved our days relaxing on the south coast.
One of the questions I get asked when people are planning a trip is: when is the best time to visit Sri Lanka? I’d love to say a specific month or two, but realistically, the answer isn’t quite as straightforward as that.

Sri Lanka has two monsoon seasons, and they affect different parts of the island at different times of year. That means you could be enjoying sunshine and blue skies on one coast while another region is experiencing heavy rain. I’ve visited twice, once in January (on honeymoon) and a second time at the end of March as a family. The weather was pretty good on both trips, although on both there was a bit of rain and pretty intense heat!
If you’re currently in the planning stages, I’m going to breakdown the best time to visit Sri Lanka, including the best months for different destinations, what to expect from the weather and how to plan your itinerary around the seasons.

Quick Guide: When Is the Best Time to Visit Sri Lanka?
I’ll go into more detail below, but as a quick guide, these months are great times to visit.
December to March
Generally best for the south and west coasts, including Mirissa, Galle and Bentota. January to March is also a lovely time to combine ancient sights, the hill country and southern beaches.
April
A useful shoulder-season option for exploring the Cultural Triangle and hill country. Expect warm, humid conditions and occasional thunderstorms.
May to September
Generally best for the east coast and northern Sri Lanka, including Trincomalee and Arugam Bay.
October and November
A more unpredictable period, with rain possible across much of the island. Keep your plans flexible and allow room for changing weather.
Just remember, there are no guarantees. Tropical showers can happen at any time, and weather conditions vary from year to year.
Understanding Sri Lanka’s Weather and Monsoon Seasons
Before you book your flights, just remember there isn’t one season that suits the whole country. You can’t just look at the weather in Unawantuna or Colombo and apply it to the whole island.
The island is influenced by two main monsoon systems, which is why choosing your route is just as important as choosing your travel dates.
The southwest monsoon: May to September
The southwest monsoon brings rain to Sri Lanka’s west and south coasts, as well as parts of the central hill country. You’ll want to bear this in mind if you’re thinking of visiting destinations such as Colombo or coastal towns like Galle and Mirissa. You’ll need to prepare for rain and choppy seas at times.
It’s often calmer and dryer on the east coast around this time, so there’s still somewhere to enjoy.

The northeast monsoon: October to January
The northeast monsoon season mainly affects the north and east of Sri Lanka, bringing wetter conditions to destinations such as Trincomalee and the north coast. This is often a great time to visit the south and west coasts.
My advice is to be flexible with your plans. We didn’t expect every day to be sunny. It’s a country which often has overcast days, and spots of rain. It doesn’t last all day and there’s still plenty to love.
Weather in Sri Lanka’s central highlands
We loved our time in Sri Lanka’s beautiful hill country, but it’s worth knowing that the climate is very different there. When you reach Ella or Kandy, you’ll notice it’s a lot cooler, especially in the evenings. You think of it being warm every day, but when you get up to the higher altitude spots, it’s a lot chillier.

The hill country was one of the parts of our trip I was particularly glad we included. With its lush scenery, tea plantations and mountain views, it offers a completely different side of Sri Lanka from the beaches and historic sights.

Best Time to Visit Sri Lanka by Region
The best way to plan your trip is to think about which destinations matter most to you. Our January honeymoon was an adventurous trip, packing in a lot of sights over two weeks. However, if you mainly want to see wildlife or have a week on the beach, your travel dates might be different.
Here’s when I’d aim to visit each part of the island.
Best time to visit the south and west coast of Sri Lanka: December to March
December to March is the best time to visit Sri Lanka’s south and west coasts. As mentioned, my trips in January and March were both great for weather. You’ll be able to visit places such as Mirissa, Galle and Bentota, and enjoy lazy beach days and boat trips.
We also found this a good time for Ella, Sigiriya and Colombo.

Mirissa is one of my top picks on the coast. It’s got a great vibe and has lovely restaurants, cafes, hotels and is somewhere you can spot whales and dolphins. I also loved seeing Galle’s historic streets, cool shops and experiencing the food scene. It was very humid when we visited in March though – I remember sweating the second I got out of our air-conditioned car!
If you’re planning a route around the island at this time of year, I’d recommend reading my two-week Sri Lanka itinerary.

Best time to visit the east coast: May to September
Visiting Sri Lanka during the British summer holidays? Don’t assume it’s the wrong time to go! There are some great places to see, even though the southwest isn’t very reliable at this time of year.
Consider visiting Trincomalee, which is known for its beautiful beaches and clear waters. Alternatively, if you’re a surfer or love laid-back beach days, Arugam Bay is a great option. It’s much better to head to this coast, than risk endless rainy days in Mirissa or Bentota.
Best time to visit Ella and the hill country: January to March
While many countries have amazing beaches, I think its the central highlands that feel distinctly Sri Lankan! We loved seeing the misty mountains, lush green landscapes, tea plantations and waterfalls. I’ll admit the windy roads were a test on my stomach, but the views were worth it!
We visited Ella on both of our trips (January and March) and the weather was great. After the heat and humidity elsewhere, we appreciated a few days of slightly cooler temperatures as we explored places like Little Adam’s Peak, Ravana Falls and the Nine Arch Bridge.
If you’re planning to include Ella in your trip, take a look at my guide to the best things to do in Ella. It’s packed with ideas for making the most of this beautiful part of the island.

Best time to visit Sigiriya and the Cultural Triangle: December to April
Sri Lanka’s Cultural Triangle is home to some of the country’s most fascinating historic sights. This is where you’ll find ancient cities, remarkable temples and the iconic Sigiriya Rock Fortress.
The region can be hot throughout the year, so it’s worth doing activities early in the morning. We were up and out very early for our climbs up Sigiriya and Pidurangala. Sunrise is unbeatable!
If you’re visiting for the first time, my two-week Sri Lanka itinerary includes Sigiriya alongside Ella, Udawalawe and the south coast.

Best time to visit Sri Lanka for safaris: varies
Sri Lanka is an incredible destination for wildlife lovers, with national parks offering the chance to see elephants, jaguars and crocodiles in their natural habitats.
We went on safari in Udawalawe National Park and loved watching elephants in the wild. Seeing baby elephants feeding beside their mothers was one of the highlights of our honeymoon. It’s the kind of experience that stays with you long after the trip is over!

There are several parks to go on safari, including Minneriya, Yala and Udawalawe. I’d pick the one that fits with your route and weather conditions. The best time for a safari can depend on factors like recent rainfall. Drier periods can make wildlife easier to spot in some locations, but sightings are never guaranteed.
If Udawalawe is on your wish list, read my guide to planning a safari in Udawalawe National Park before you go.
When Is the Cheapest Time to Visit Sri Lanka?
If your dates are flexible, I’d recommend travelling outside of main school holidays, as you’re likely to find cheaper accommodation and experience fewer crowds. Shoulder seasons are often great as the weather is still good, but you won’t be have so many people at the main attractions.
If I was planning another trip, I’d decide on two or three experiences I don’t want to miss, then look at when is best to visit for those and compare prices.
What Is the Best Time to Visit Sri Lanka with Kids?
Sri Lanka is an amazing destination for a family trip. Our second visit was in late March / early April and we visited beaches, went on safari and enjoyed some amazing train trips.
If you’re travelling with children, I’d think about the pace of your itinerary as well as the weather. Long drives, early safari starts and hot afternoons can be tiring, so it’s worth building in some downtime.
For a first family trip, I’d recommend visiting between December and March. You’ll be able to combine time in the Cultural Triangle, hill country with beach time on the south or west coast. If you’re visiting during the UK/European summer holidays, then head to the east coast.

When Is the Best Time to Visit Sri Lanka?
As you can see, it’s not a straightforward decision. However, for a classic first trip combining ancient sights, mountain scenery, wildlife and beaches on the south coast, I’d visit between January to March.
Ultimately, there’s no single perfect month for every part of the island. Work out what you most want to see, choose your destinations accordingly and leave a little room for the unexpected. After all, a rainy day in Galle can be just as memorable as a sunny one!
